Car & Tire Maintenance

Flat out Fabulous.

This life skill takes place in a professional car garage with all the sights and smells. By familiarizing the student with basic car knowledge and how to change a tire before going off to college they will have the confidence needed in case of a roadside emergency and the cell phone isn’t working! Everyone participates by changing a flat tire, locating the spare, tire iron, lug nuts, and by checking tire pressure. Discussion on how to avoid unnecessary repairs and practicing popping the hood, checking fluids, using jumper cables are just some of the topics covered.

Banking & Budgeting

Show Me the Money.
 
Financial success in life begins with the basics. Living on a budget, online banking, managing credit and debit cards, how to stay out of debt, credit report scores, identity theft, how to cash and write a check, transaction slips, ATM machines, using the drive through service are just some of the topics covered. This course taught by Compass Bank will be using the Federal Reserve’s lesson plan from Hurricane Katrina which explains by consuming wisely, saving and investing the financially prepared are more able to regain equilibrium, which also helps the economy and your household remain stable.

Personal Safety & Self-Defense

Avoid Being an Easy Victim!

The importance of awareness, situational avoidance, and learning prevention techniques will help reduce the chances of your child being attacked. Real life situations with guest speakers will be presented. The instructor is a seasoned Detective from the State Attorney’s office. We will practice individually, “how to remove yourself from a choke hold, body grab, and what can be used around you as a weapon.” Internet and parking lot dangers, dorm, home and apartment safety are discussed and the most common mistakes to avoid. Help your child be safe!

Laundry & Ironing

Got Laundry? Loads of Fun.

Whether your child has been doing laundry for years or has never done a day of laundry in their life something new is to be learned! This class is taught by a wash, dry, fold expert at a clean coin laundry mat. The basics of ironing, tag reading, testing for color fastness, whether to hand wash or dry clean, sorting clothes, detergent types and strengths, fabric softener and bleach use, stain removal, what is an HE and making change for the washer/dryers will be part of the class. By bringing in a load of your own laundry and participating with a group of peers this life skill is fun to learn.

Clean Your Space 

Clean Space - Maid Simple.

If living in a dorm room, first apartment or home our instructor will explain how to get your space clean and germ-free safely and quickly.  The approach to cleaning areas like countertops, bathrooms, appliances and floors are discussed and demonstrated along with proper chemical selection including green and traditional solutions.  If you hate filth, but cleaning even more, this class will make the job efficient and effective.  Learning the “Do’s and Dont's" of the industry is informative and entertaining. How to turn off running water and more...
